Macadam base under asphalt road...

I have to cut about 6" of asphalt along a road and the engineer suspects theres an old Macadam road underneath, say maybe 6" thick also. Does the sawcutting subcontractor need to cut all the way through the Macadam too, or will it crumble apart when I excavate?
