We are installing a foundation on a subgrade that has turned out to be about the least desirable soil one would want for a building. I have concerns about using the native material to backfill the wall if it is going to expand and contract considerably and apply pressure laterally against the foundation wall. What soil profile range has been known to cause these types of issues? Is it worth the project cost to bring in premium material to backfill the wall?
