I've seen some roads and highways that are relatively new that have suffered from major heaving shortly after placement. I'm assuming the engineers pavement section was adequate and the contractor installed per spec. Is there a subgrade soil profile/gradation that is widely considered in engineering to be very bad for roads, so much so that it will fail even with perfectly adequate engineering and installation?
